The sky needed openness. The water needed movement. The tower and palm tree gave the scene its sense of place. With each decision, I looked for what to keep and what to leave out, so the painting would still have room to breathe.
Most of all, I wanted the couple to carry the moment: walking together, looking ahead, and discovering the House of Refuge along this stretch of coast. Their presence brings us into the painting and lets us share in that discovery.
